The 200-acre Oquawka Refuge, acquired by the state of Illinois in 1925, contains the area's oldest pine plantation. Established in 1928 and known as Milroy Plantation, the 17-acre area contains red, white and jack pines that tower more than 50 feet high. Subsequent land purchases, beginning in 1941 and 1942, and leases from the Corps of Engineers, have brought the forest to 2,900 total acres.
